Frederick McCann was born in Grimsby in 1925, and lived at 166 Lovett Street, Cleethorpes with his parents James and Margaret, and his older brother James. Fred was a Scout with 4th Cleethorpes.
In the Second World War, as soon as he was old enough he joined the Navy as a Canteen Assistant at the Navy Army and Air Force Institute, and was posted aboard HMS Manchester.
Frederick McCann was killed in action on the 23rd July 1941, when HMS Manchester was hit by an aerial torpedo whilst escorting an eastbound Malta convoy, with the loss of 26 lives. He is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, and also on his Mother’s gravestone in Cleethorpes Cemetery- along with his older brother who, it seems, was also lost at sea that year.
