Harry Nicholas Brownie Bates was born in Grimsby in 1909, the son of Bertram Harold and Annie Bates. He was a Scout with 6th Grimsby Group before joining the army and becoming Lance Corporal (2592883) of 101 Special Wireless Section, Royal Corps of Signals.
101 Special Wireless Section was a radio interception unit working in support of 8 Army, with the task to intercept Axis radio communications and use them for intelligence purposes.
He was killed on active service on 5th May 1944, Age 35, and is buried at Biguglia War Cemetery, Corsica
